Optimisation | Regulating | Dialling In |

Bio-Hacking | Locking In | Upgrading |

Wherever you look; there’s someone talking about how you can upscale and upgrade. The latest hacks, trending products, quick fixes to totally transform your life. As humans, we are drawn to these eye catching bold claims- like magpies to a shiny object.

Because they often come with promises that this thing will make life easier. Will give us all the answers we are desperately searching for. That in order to fully OPTIMISE our health, we need to buy into a product, pill or programme. It plays into our competitive nature. Because if we see someone else “thriving” or excelling in something, we instantly feel that’s the path we need to take too. To match their efforts or even beat them. Just to say, we too, are just as disciplined, driven and committed. That we care enough about our goals (whatever these are) to go the extra step.

There are people out there trying to bio-hack their way to immortality. Spending HUGE amounts of money and time, to achieve what they deem to be human excellence.

But most of us (I presume you if you’re reading this), just want to live a happier, healthier life. To not be in pain, or feel limited by our health in any way. To have independence, be able to say yes to fun things, challenge ourselves, play with our children and hopefully live a long fulfilling life. Not spend our entire life living in lab like conditions; regenerating, powering up and exposing ourselves to all sorts of science experiments.

That drive for improvement, is in us all. I’m guilty of it. The entire fitness industry is. Encouraging my clients (and myself) to improve and upgrade our fitness, health and wellbeing in some way.

But lately, it seems the world has taken it a bit too far and become obsessed with regulating something or other…

Gut Health. Insulin Levels. Hormone markers. Sleep. Menstrual Cycles. Menopause Symptoms.

It’s a never ending list of things that “experts” (using quotation marks lightly) claim we can and should be doing more about. In order to optimise our existence. They say it’s science backed, evidence based, good for us and instantly we’re hooked.

Whilst it’s great to care about your health and really want to make a positive impact on your future….

At what point does it become a bitttt 🤏🏼 too much? We spend so much time worrying about reducing stress levels, that our cortisol shoots up, we don’t sleep and shock horror, we end up more stressed. Plus, the things we are obsessing over and the minute details we’re neurotically tracking, often come at a massive cost. Financially and time wise.

December is already full on enough. So here are some basic, cheap and more manageable ways you can “regulate” yourself this month.

⭐️ exercise & move your body intentionally. It doesn’t have to be huge amounts. Studies show 30 minutes daily, or 150 minutes over the week contributes to the general exercise recommendations.

⭐️ go for a walk & touch grass. The power of being outside, exposed to fresh air, getting amongst nature and taking yourself away from a screen.

Bonus points if you embrace it as much as this guy living his best life with his lawnmower.

⭐️ eat a few veggies (a roast potato doesn’t count). We all know they’re good for us, but the nutritional value of fruit and veg goes beyond hitting your 5 a day. Antioxidants help immunity really in winter. Plus they’re full of fibre, vitamins, minerals and plant protein source.

⭐️ try to include well rounded nutrition in your day ; whole-foods, fibre, protein, colour, seasonal produce. You don’t need expensive trendy superfoods. Sometimes the most “super food” you can have, are the basic, nutritionally dense staples that you’ll eat often because you enjoy them.

⭐️ do an activity that grounds you, uplifts you or you’re doing just for you. Mental health and emotional health are just as pivotal as caring for your physical health.

⭐️ talk to a human (ChatGPT is not a human).

Touching base with friends, family, peers has direct influence on our mental wellbeing. As social creatures, that connection helps release dopamine, create community and can give us a sense of purpose.

Elf, a Christmas classic.

⭐️ say no to a couple of social plans. You don’t owe anybody anything. You probably don’t need or want to go to them all. It might be the relief you need!

Make December a time where you thrive, not just survive. Where fitness is a big part of your life, not your entire life. Where being healthy is a quality you identify in yourself, not your entire identity.
